Traditional Karnataka dal curry with coconut and jaggery

Ingredients
- 1 cup oily toor dal
- 2 tbsp grated coconut
- 1 tsp jaggery
- 1 tbsp tamarind paste
- 1 tsp sambar powder
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- Curry leaves
- 2 dried red chilies
- Pinch of hing
Method

Cook toor dal until soft, mash and thin with water.

Add tamarind, jaggery, sambar powder and salt.

Grind coconut to paste and stir into the dal.

Simmer for 10 minutes on low heat.

Temper with mustard seeds, dried chilies, curry leaves and hing.

Serve hot over steamed rice with ghee and papad.
