Andhra-style toor dal cooked with tangy tomato and tamarind

  • 1 cup oily toor dal
  • 3 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste
  • 4 green chilies
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Curry leaves
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • Pinch of hing
  • 2 tbsp oil

Method

    Cook toor dal with tomatoes and turmeric until very soft.

    Add tamarind paste, green chilies and salt, simmer 10 minutes.

    Mash the dal well for smooth consistency.

    Heat oil, add mustard, cumin, dried chilies, curry leaves and hing.

    Pour tempering over the pappu and mix well.

    Serve with hot steamed rice and a dollop of ghee.
