Eastern Indian steamed rice dumplings stuffed with spiced dal

Ingredients

  • 1 cup toor dal
  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 1 onion, chopped fine
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for greasing

Method

    Cook dal until soft, drain excess water and mash coarsely.

    Season dal with cumin, onion, green chilies and salt for filling.

    Make pliable dough with rice flour and hot water.

    Roll small circles, place dal filling in centre and fold into half-moon.

    Seal edges tightly by pressing with a fork.

    Steam in a greased steamer for 15 minutes until cooked through.
